The Cultivation Classic did an excellent job of focusing on the medical potential of Cannabis beyond the ability of getting high for fun.
The best and brightest showed out for the 2017 Cultivation Classic (CC), presented by the Willamette Week and Farma. The CC is “Oregon’s only competition exclusively for OMRI or OMRI-equivalent flower produced in the state without pesticides.”
For the second year in a row, I had the honor of judging the flower competition. During the first CC last year, I judged the THC category. This year, I volunteered to judge the CBD and 1:1 entries. I was gifted twelve entries to examine and there was the good, the bad and the ugly.

If you are not aware of the use of heavy metal fertilizers in cannabis cultivation, you really need to do some research. I believe in the wellness benefits of cannabis, but one thing that is not on a lot of people’s radars is heavy metal fertilizers and how it may affect consumers’ health. It’s one aspect of cannabis consumption that I will readily concede should be a health concern for society.
Oregon is home to one of the best craft cannabis scenes in the nation, if not the world, which makes sense considering how long people have been growing cannabis here. Legendary breeders like DJ Short are from Oregon, so quality genetics have been around here for a long time, in addition to craft cannabis cultivation practices. Oregon’s craft cannabis growers are going to be on full display this Friday when the Cultivation Classic takes place in Portland, Oregon. By celebrating craft and community within the cannabis movement, Cultivation Classic, presented by WW with Farma, Cascadia Labs, Phylos Bioscience and the Resource Innovation Institute, supports and develops the leading edge of regenerative farming practices in Oregon. The event and awards will take place on May 12, 2017, at Revolution Hall in Portland.

The Weather Gods blessed us with sunshine and warm temps as we made our way to the North Warehouse for the Cultivation Classic, an event that was held by Willamette Week, Cascadia Labs and Farma. This event was the first of it’s kind here in Oregon, a competition where growers submitted samples of flower that were soil-grown, using only organic methods. The samples in question were judged by local tastemakers in the area and the Cultivation Classic is where the winners were to be announced.
